Tshifhiwa Maumela (born 1959), professionally known as Judge Maumela, is a former student activist and High Court judge.
He has preceded many trials throughout his legal career. Maumela has always fought for justice and has been the voice for the weak. During his studies, he was active in student activism.

Early Life
Tshifhiwa Maumela was born in 1959 in South Africa. He grew up during the heat of the Apartheid to experience the racial segregation it caused.
Tshifhiwa was born to black parents who also suffered from the widely practiced in South Africa raising him during those discriminatory times.
In 1977, the security police handcuffed him and pulled off his hair. The pain from the torture changed him forever and motivated him to be a man of the law.
Through the judges’ bench Tshifhiwa has fought for the voiceless and has passed sentences on many.
Education
Maumela studied in primary and high school in South Africa. He studied Law at the University of Venda. While in school, he was a student activist against the unfair government.
Career
Judge Maumela is a high court Judge. Jacob Zuma appointed him as a Judge of the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, effective from January 30, 2012.
Tshifhiwa has worked as a prosecutor and magistrate for years. Other notable advocates describe him as a person who fought tirelessly for Justice all his life.
The courageous judge has also impressed many in the law field with his brilliance and meticulousness in continuing to pass fair judgments.
He is the presiding judge in the murder case of the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. He has been practicing as a lawyer since 2012 since his appointment by former president Jacob Zuma.
The murder of the goalkeeper drew the attention of many people and the media to him. He has also worked as a magistrate and a prosecutor.
Like many people whose circumstances and past occurrences affected their choices, Tshifhiwa decided to study law after his arrest and torture in 1977.
According to him, the police handcuffed him and pulled him by his hair. The pain and agony of the torture gave birth to his interest in being a lawyer. And the legal practitioner has never cut his hair since that day.
Arrest
In 1976, the police apprehended the former student activist for participating in a protest. The later turn violent protest in Limpopo did not start in 1976. Students were not happy that the police dispersed a mass gathering in 1977.
They expressed anger by stoning police vehicles. They matched down to government offices on Makwarela to set these offices ablaze, with no records of fatalities.
Maumela says the fallen student activists were not given national recognition until 1994. They celebrated the fallen hero of the Soweto uprising that began on the morning of June 16, 1976.
The police arrested him, handcuffed him, and pulled off his hair. With the pain, he concluded that he would never cut his hair.
The ill-treatment fueled his zeal for activism. Maumela decided to gain the legal podium to speak against those discriminatory practices.
