Biography
Maite Nkoana-Mashabane (born September 30, 1963) is a South African politician. She is the incumbent minister for Women, Youth, and People with Disabilities.
Ms. Nkoana served as Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform from 2018 to 2019). Before this capacity, she served as the Minister of International Relations from 2014 to 2018.
From 1994 to 1995, she was a member of the parliament in the National Assembly. She was a member of the United Democratic Front.
Maite participated in the Mass Democratic Movement and the ANC underground structures in the 1980s.
Nkoana-Mashabane has gone on diplomatic missions to countries like India, Malaysia, and the Maldives. She is a member of the ANC NEC and National Working Committee,

Early Life
Maite Nkoana-Mashabane was born on September 30, 1963, in Magoebaskloof in the Limpopo province of South Africa. She grew up in Gakanye in Limpopo.
Ms. Nkoana-Mashabane was a member of the United Democratic fronts. She took part in many structures of the Mass Democratic Movement. She has also served in many of the ANC underground structures.
Education
Ms. Maite Nkoana-Mashabane received a master’s degree in Diplomatic Studies at the University of Pretoria.
Career
After lifting the ban on the African National Congress in 1990, she performed duties for the party in many structures. She served in the ANCWL and played a notable role in relaunching the party’s auxiliary women’s political organization.
Ms. Maite was appointed as South African High Commissioner to India and Malaysia. In Limpopo, she was the Chairperson of the African National Congress Women’s League.
Nkoana-Mashabane was first elected to the National Executive Committee at the National Conference in Polokwane in December 2007.
From 1992 to 1995, she served as a member of the ANC National Working Committee (NWC) of the ANC. After returning to the country, she became Limpopo’s Local Government and Housing Member of the Executive Council.
The December 2012 election saw her reelection as a member of the National Executive Committee of the ruling party at the party’s 53rd National Conference in Manguang.
Nkoana-Mashabane served as the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation under President Jacob Zuma’s administration.
South Africa joined the group of emerging economies under the BRICS banner during her tenure as Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
From November to December 2011, she presided over the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban.
Maite administered an oath of office for another term as the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation in 2014. After the 2015 election, she became the Treasurer General of the ANCWL.
Lindiwe Sisulu filled her position after she moved to the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform in 2018. She rose to infamy following an interview with Al-Jazeera in 1996.
President Cyril Ramaphosa named her Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities in May 2019.
Personal Life
Maite Nkoana-Mashabane was married to Norman Mashabane. Her husband was the former South African Ambassador to Indonesia. The country deported him to South Africa for sexual harassment charges.
The Pretoria High Court found him guilty of the charges. Ms. Maite lost her husband to a car accident in 2007.
