Nomusa Dube-Ncube premier

Dube-Ncube is a former diplomat and municipal speaker. She is the first female premier of KwaZulu-Natal province.

Biography

Nomusa Dube-Ncube (born July 1) is a South African politician. She is the current KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance. 

Dube-Ncube was the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs for ten years. She is a member of the ruling party African National Congress.

Dube-Ncube served as the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs. She has represented South Africa as ambassador to the Czech Republic. She has held two provincial ANC top five positions, deputy secretary and treasurer.

Early Life

Nomusa Dube-Ncube was born on July 1 in KwaMashu, a township 12 KM north of Durban, South Africa.

Education

Dube-Ncube has three diplomas in public management, management and leadership, and training and development. She obtained a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Career

Nomusa is a Member of the Executive Council for the Finance portfolio in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government. She is also a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Climate Change Council.

Dube-Ncube is a Board Member for a New York-based Non-Profit Organisation, 911 Fund. Dube-Ncube was the Leader of Government Business within the Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal.

Nomusa was the mayor of the North Central council. Her tenure ended in 2000 when it was merged into the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.

Dube-Ncube then was the chief whip of the eThekwini council. She was later appointed as South African ambassador to the Czech Republic.

After the 2009 election, she became a lawmaker in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature. The African National Congress appointed her as Chief Whip.

Nomusa left the position after premier Zweli Mkhize appointed her as MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in July 2009.

Dube-Ncube remained in the position during Senzo Mchunu’s tenure. Sihle Zikalala appointed her as MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs in May 2019.

In November 2020, Nomusa replaced Ravi Pillay as the MEC for Finance. A January 2023 report claims that Dube-Ncube is vying for the post of provincial chairperson of the ANC. The African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League has endorsed her. 

MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube was announced as the next premier of the KwaZulu-Natal after Sihle Zikalala stepped down.

Personal life

Nomusa Dube-Ncube was happily married to businessman Sibusiso Ncube. 

Her husband was chairperson of Brandpartners, a Brand Marketing and Communications Company. He died in hospital on Wednesday evening following a short illness in January 2021.
