Mother & Father

Kohli was born into a Punjabi Hindu family in Delhi, India. His father, Prem Kohli, worked as a criminal lawyer, and his mother, Saroj Kohli, served as a housewife. His family revealed that Kohli exhibited an early affinity for cricket as a mere three-year-old. He picked up a cricket bat, displayed natural skill, and requested his father to bowl to him.

At nine, his father assisted his aspirations and arranged for him to meet Rajkumar Sharma. Sharma initially perceived him as just another enthusiastic and determined young boy but was impressed by Kohli’s accuracy and power in throwing two weeks later. Kohli’s father considered enrolling him in a professional cricket academy upon the advice of a neightbour. They believed that his cricketing abilities merited more than just playing in gully cricket.

Despite receiving offers to relocate his son to influential clubs, which would have ensured his selection, Kohli’s father declined the proposals. He was determined that Kohli should earn his recognition based on his merit. He also hoped to overcome the system of nepotism and deceit prevalent in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

On 18 December 2006, his father died due to a cerebral attack. Kohli credited his father as the one who drove him to practice every day and said he missed his father’s presence at times. His mother noticed a change in his behaviour following his father’s passing. She noted that he became more mature.
