Biography

Kithure Kindiki (born July 17, 1972) is a prominent Kenya politician, lawyer, and businessperson. He is the incumbent Minister of Interior and Administration of the National Government.

From 2013 to 2022, he represented Tharaka-Nithi County in the Kenyan Senate.

The accomplished legal scholar has taught for seven years at the university. His experience ranges from the undergraduate to post-graduate levels.

Early life

Kithure Kindiki was born on July 17, 1972, in Tharaka-Nithi County. He hails from a family of nine children.

His family has produced at least five professors. He and his brothers are Professors, while his sisters hold at least a master’s degree.

Education

Legal scholar Kindiki’s Curriculum Vitae (CV) shows that he loves knowledge. He completed his secondary school study at Lenana School in Nairobi. He sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and scored Grade C.

The grade couldn’t meet the passing mark for the university, so he retook the exam at Tharaka Boys High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) from Moi University in 1998.

Kithure obtained a Master of Law (LLM) in International Human Rights Law and Democracy from the University of Pretoria (UP) in 2000.

In 2001, he attended Advocates’ Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies at the Kenya School of Law. He completed his Ph.D. in International Law at the University of Pretoria in 2002.

Career

Educational

After graduating from school, he started to work as a law lecturer at Moi University in 1999. 

Eventually, he got a job at the University of Nairobi from 2004 until 2005. He joined the Public Law department of Moi University.

Political

After the 2013 Kenyan general election, Kindiki emerged as the winner to represent Tharaka-Nithi County in the Senate. In the Senate, he served as the first majority leader.

After the 2017 election, Kindiki got reelected and was the Deputy Speaker of the Senate. He lost his position as the deputy speaker in 2020.

Kindiki served as the Minister of the Interior, and Mwenda Gataya became his successor in the Senate.

Personal Life

Kithure Kindiki married Joyce Gatiiria Njagi in 2001. The couple is the proud parents of two children.

Kithure Kindiki told the Parliamentary Committee of Appointments that he had a net worth of Ksh.544 million in 2020. 

His worth consists of land and buildings worth around Ksh.165 million. He had bank deposits of about Ksh.50 million, investments in shares, and deposits of five different Saccos.

The Professor told the committee for vetting in October 2020 that law practice, businesses, and consultancy make up his source of income. He runs some SMEs and is a consultant for organizations in and outside Kenya.
